How have I never known about pancake day?

Today is Shrove Tuesday or, as the British call it, pancake day. Apparently the day before lent begins is the traditional day to make pancakes. This comes from people cleaning out their cupboards of the last of their guilty things before they begin their Lenten ways. Or something like that. Its a really big deal. all the grocery stores advertise their pancake making supplies and have specials on ready-made pancakes. And yet this is the first I have ever heard of it. We have lent in Canada, why don't we eat pancakes? As a Calgary girl, I associate pancakes with the Stampede and shopping mall parking lots, not and pre-lent celebration.

In honour of the occasion, we served up pancakes at the office. As an 'Office Angel' I got the lovely task of supplying pancakes for the 200 some-odd folks who work at our offices, dubbed 'Fruit Towers'. How, you might ask, did we achieve such a feat? It was simple really; just a matter of some microwaves, some magic and some creative re-imagining of the truth. IN short: buying pre-made pancakes at the local tesco, reheating them and serving them on nice platters, all the while inventing 'Pat', the kind lady who lives up the street and really loves our company who just wanted to make us pancakes. You'd be surprised how many people took the bait.

A sick day

And finally some time to write.

I have been running around like crazy lately and completely ignoring this blog. Today, I'm home sick from work and so I have a bit of time to catch up on my writing. Don't worry, I'm just a little flu-ish, nothing major on the sick front.

What have I missed? Firstly, a most importantly, I have a new job. I have started working for a company called innocent smoothies. We make smoothies. My role is as an 'office angel' which is fitting because I've always considered myself to be somewhat angelic. The job is terrific. It is a young company, with the average age of people working there being 27. The office is covered in AstroTurf and there is a ping-pong table, a Foosball table and all sorts of other silly things lying around. The whole ethos of the company is about being happy an healthy at work, so they put a lot of time and money into team building, and health related things. There's a weekly yoga class and a masseuse who comes in every-other week. They have all sorts of activity clubs and they plan team-building weekends away. It is really more like summer camp than work. That being said, I work very hard. The office is over an hour away from my place and I put in a 9 hour work day. So I'm out of the house for nearly 12 hours a day... you can see why my blogging has slipped. I am essentially a receptionist, but I am also in charge of planning major company events, and have just started planning this year's Christmas party. Crazy. At the moment, I'm on a 6-month contract, and I'm very happy to be working steadily and not having to waitress anymore, even if I don't get to meet anymore royalty.

The second exciting thing about my life right now is that I went to Wicked on Friday. It was fantastic! My god-parents gave me some money for Christmas this year and I decided that I would use the money to see a big West-End show. They had recommended FELA! which was playing at the National Theatre. Unfortunately, it was sold out by the time I got around to getting tickets. Wicked was my second choice, and I'm so glad I went. My seat was very high up, but it didn't matter, since the show is so huge. It was wonderful to see and the singing was absolutely terrific. It reminded me of why I've come over here, and has inspired me to get back to work on the singing front. I have slipped a bit in that area, as it is so easy to do. Life in London is expensive, and i have to work all the time, which leaves very little time to pursue my vocation. I'm am currently working on finding the right balance between making money and moving my career forward. I will sort it out.

So my job is great, the show was lovely and there is one more thing that I would like to say. SALSA! Its my new favourite thing in the whole world. I started taking salsa classes in November, completely on a whim. Now, I go every week and never stop smiling. I love twirling and learning moves and meeting loads of lovely people. Anyone who comes to visit me here, is going to have to suffer through a salsa evening with me, because its more fun than I ever imagined.

That's a bit of a catch up for you. I'm going to try and get back to writing on a more regular basis. Its nice for me to document all the crazy things that are happening in my life.
thanks for reading !
